We are looking for a dependable Deck Builder with strong carpentry experience to join a crew in the Des Moines area.
This is not an entry-level role — we need 5 to 7 years of hands-on carpentry or deck-building experience. Many strong candidates for this kind of work have run their own crew or worked independently for years. If you're ready to put down the invoicing, the scheduling, the marketing, and the rest of running a business, and just focus on building, this is a good fit — we handle the administrative side so you can do the work you're actually good at.
The work is outdoors, in all the weather that comes with Iowa's building season. Expect to be on your feet, lifting lumber, climbing ladders, and running power tools all day. It's physical work, and it's steady work for someone who takes pride in a deck built right.
Schedule
Weekdays, daytime hours, with occasional weekend work during peak building season.
Responsibilities
- Build and install wood and composite decks, including framing, decking, railings, and stairs, from blueprints or verbal specifications.
- Measure, cut, and assemble lumber and decking materials to exact specifications using hand and power tools.
- Set and secure deck posts, footings, and support beams to meet load and code requirements.
- Install railings, balusters, stair stringers, and treads to safety and code standards.
- Read and interpret blueprints, project plans, and permit drawings.
- Operate table saws, miter saws, drills, nail guns, and other carpentry power tools safely.
- Apply flashing, fasteners, and weatherproofing to protect structures from moisture damage.
- Level and grade job sites as needed to prepare for deck construction.
- Load, unload, and haul lumber and materials to and from job sites.
- Inspect completed work for quality, stability, and code compliance.
- Coordinate with crew leads and other trades on multi-phase projects.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site.
Requirements
- 5 to 7 years of hands-on carpentry or deck-building experience required.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to job sites.
- Ability to lift 50+ pounds and work on your feet outdoors in varying weather.
- Comfortable working at heights and on ladders.
- Own basic hand tools preferred.
- Ability to pass a background check.
- English not required.
Benefits
- Competitive pay based on experience.
- Steady, consistent work — no chasing your own clients.
- We handle scheduling, invoicing, marketing, and admin so you can focus on building.
- Full-time, year-round work for qualified candidates.
- Work with an established crew, not alone.
